Balanced Annihilation (often shortened to BA) is a real-time strategy video game built upon the Spring engine, created as a continuation of Absolute Annihilation following its long developmental hiatus and subsequent discontinuation.

History[]

Balanced Annihilation's history traces back to the mod Absolute Annihilation by Caydr (2002-2006). AA was based on ÜberHack by Brave Sir Robin (1998-2002). The Swedish Yankspankers work on the TA Demo Recorder (1999-2004) made it possible for AA to be ported to 3D and these efforts led to the creation of Balanced Annihilation in 2006 using the Spring engine. Zero-K and Beyond All Reason were both forked from BA in the past.

Gameplay[]

Balanced Annihilation inherits almost every units and mechanics from Total Annihilation series, with some differences. Each player always starts with their respective Commander and depending of the choice made by any player, the main mission and victory conditions are to destroy all enemy commanders or destroy every enemy units from the map. Construction is governed by the possession of the game's two unlimited resources, Metal and Energy, and can be undertaken by factories or mobile construction units. When managing Metal Makers, the player can use the Energy bar to adjust the minimum energy required to make Metal Makers work, and thus, controlling the energy quantity that is going to be converted into metal.

Unlike Total Annihilation, Balanced Annihilation classes the units and buildings in 3 levels, now classing big units such as the Krogoth in tech level 3. Also reclasses some others due to their performance, such as the Defender now in tech level 1.

Like most Spring RTS games, Balanced Annihilation requires also a lobby, such as SpringLobby or SkyLobby to set up correctly any new game before starting it.

Tournaments[]

Balanced Annihilation runs competitive 1v1 tournaments that attract many dedicated players. At 64 players the 2022 Crown Cup 5 tournament was the largest tournament in Spring's 16 year history. Players battle for a place in the Balance Committee and the BA crown, a unique in-game item for the commander that can only be aquired by winning the event. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]
